Objective

Upon successful completion of the English as a Second Language program, the student will have been trained in the necessary skills to grasp and utilize the fundamentals of the English language at a basic, intermediate, or advanced level; converse in English; understand the written English language; and understand the cultural and social tenets of American society to facilitate assimilation.

Having successfully completed the English as a Second Language program, students may qualify for a variety of positions depending upon their existing skill, interest, and desires.

Course Descriptions

ESL-100 English Phonetics 30-hours / 1 credit

This course is designed to provide the student with the foundation to demonstrate knowledge of the English alphabet; improve his/her English pronunciation; be familiar with the sounds of the English language; improve his or her listening comprehension; have a better understanding of English spelling; and feel more confident when speaking. PREREQUISITES: NONE

ESL-200 English Grammar 150-hours / 10 credits

This course is designed to provide the student with the foundation to improve reading skills and increase vocabulary; understand grammatical structures and usage appropriate to their level; and write sentences or paragraphs appropriate to their level. PREREQUISITES: NONE

ESL-300 Conversation 150 hours / 10 credits

This course is designed to provide the student with the foundation to improve pronunciation; speak with greater confidence; increase vocabulary; improve reading skills; become familiar with and practice idioms; and improve ability to handle “everyday” conversational needs. PREREQUISITES: NONE

ESL-400 Culture / Career English 150 hours / 10 credits

This course is designed to provide the student with the foundation to become familiar with the customs and traditions of the United States; be familiar with U.S. history, geography and social structures; be familiar with current events in the United States; understand the interview process; be able to discuss skills and experiences during an interview; and prepare a resume.

ESL-500 TOEFL Preparation 50 hours / 3 credits

This course is designed to provide the student with the foundation to improve reading comprehension; improve vocabulary; improve writing skills; and understand and use more complex structures of English at a basic, intermediate, or advanced level. PREREQUISITES: NONE

ESL-600 Language Laboratory 190 hours / 6 credits

This course is designed to provide the student with the foundation to improve listening comprehension; speak with more confidence; improve pronunciation; increase vocabulary; and improve spelling. PREREQUISITES: NONE
