OBJECTIVE

Upon successful completion of the Surveillance & Security Specialist program, the student will have been trained in the necessary skills to fill a variety of crime-prevention positions within a multitude of settings, utilizing knowledge of criminal and constitutional law, public and private investigations, surveillance and loss prevention techniques, law enforcement policies and procedures, and basic first aid and CPR.

Having successfully completed the program, the student may qualify for such positions as Loss Prevention Specialist, Private Investigator, and Security officer.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

SSS-100 Introduction to Criminal Justice 60 hours / 4 credits

This course is designed to familiarize the student with the basic issues and components of the criminal justice system, including criminal justice issues and theories; policing; the criminal courts; imprisonment; community corrections; juvenile justice; and victims' rights. PREREQUISITE: NONE

SSS-110 Basic First Aid & CPR 60 hours / 3 credits

This course is designed to familiarize the student with the essentials of first aid and CPR as set forth by the National Safety Council, including legal issues, precautions, victim assessment, basic life support techniques, and emergency treatment of bleeding and shock, wounds, burns, various injuries, sudden illness, poisoning, bites and stings, and cold- and heat-related emergencies. PREREQUISITE: NONE

SSS-200 Criminal Law 60 hours / 4 credits

This course is designed to give the student an overview of both criminal law and criminal procedures that relate to law enforcement and the criminal justice system, including the fundamentals of criminal law and procedure; the organization of the criminal justice system; a wide variety of criminal offenses; requirements for search, seizure, arrest, interrogation, and identification; and various phases of court procedures. PREREQUISITE: NONE

SSS-210 Law Enforcement Procedures 60 hours / 3 credits

This course is designed to introduce students to the various law enforcement procedures utilized to conduct an arrest, perform a search and seizure, conduct interviews, obtain confessions, comply with Miranda requirements, follow the laws of evidence, and deal with controlled substances. PREREQUISITE: NONE

SSS-300 Constitutional Law 60 hours / 4 credits

This course is designed to introduce students to the various law enforcement procedures utilized to conduct an arrest, perform a search and seizure, conduct interviews, obtain confessions, comply with Miranda requirements, follow the laws of evidence, and deal with controlled substances. PREREQUISITE: NONE

SSS-310 Introduction to Public and Private Investigation 60 hours / 3 credits

This course is designed to give the student an overview of why and how investigations are conducted and an awareness of who investigators are and what they do—the systems, policies, procedures (including surveillance), tools, and problems associated with investigations, and how to succeed in them. PREREQUISITE: NONE

SSS-400 Criminology 45 hours / 3 credits

This course is designed to give students a comprehensive overview of all areas of criminology, including crime, law, criminological theory, and crime topologies. PREREQUISITE: NONE

SSS-410 Loss Prevention Concepts 60 hours / 3 credits

This course is designed to help the student understand the design and planning of physical security within a business environment, including the awareness of crime prevention through environmental design and the use of various types of security equipment such as locks, security lighting, infrared motion detectors, closed circuit TV, passive motion detectors, alarm panel control boxes, and quad switches. PREREQUISITE: NONE

SSS-420 Career Preparation 15 hours / 1 credit

This course is designed to give students the necessary skills to plan and carry out a successful job search—job sources, search skills, resume preparation, letter writing, and interviewing skills. PREREQUISITE: NONE
