OBJECTIVE

Upon successful completion of the Computerized Business & Accounting program, the student will have been trained in the necessary skills to understand and apply generally accepted accounting principles in both service and merchandise industries as well as corporate environments. The student will be able to utilize business productivity software (including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) and accounting the software packages QuickBooks, and Peachtree Accounting in performing accounting responsibilities. The student will also have been trained to communicate effectively in a professional business environment.

Having successfully completed the program, the student may qualify for such positions as Bookkeeping Assistant, Accounting Clerk, Junior Accountant, or Payroll Clerk.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

BUS-100 PC Applications I 120 hours / 6 credits

This course is designed to provide the student with the necessary skills to understand and use computer terminology; to utilize the Windows operating system in performing functions with the Windows desktop environment; to perform basic touch-typing at a minimum proficiency of 20 words per minute; to create and revise business documents with Microsoft Word features such as editing, formatting, saving, retrieving, and enhancing; to understand and productively use the Internet for research and communication, including using search engines and sending and receiving e-mail messages and attachments. PREREQUISITE: NONE

BUS-200 Business Communications 120 hours / 6 credits

This course is designed to provide the student with the foundation to develop a working knowledge of correct business communication, mechanics, and usage of grammar; utilize correct word choices in sentences; analyze the contents of various types of messages; write effective e-mails, memos, and letters; make oral reports; develop and improve proofreading abilities; and develop effective communication skills for employment to include: resumes, cover letters, and interviews. BUS-201 PC Applications II 120 hours / 6 credits

This course is designed to provide the student with the necessary skills to understand to utilize various Microsoft Excel tools to manipulate a spreadsheet; to use Microsoft Access to create, save, edit and retrieve database files; and to use Microsoft PowerPoint to create, animate, and save original presentations. PREREQUISITE: BUS-100 PC APPLICATIONS I

CBA-102 Basic Accounting 120 hours / 6 credits

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to understand commonly used accounting principles and terminology applicable to the service industry; including debits and credits, the seven steps of the accounting cycle, banking procedures, cash control, payroll, and the employer's tax responsibilities. In addition, the student will be able to apply computational skills to basic accounting situations; including the use of whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, discounts, interest, and promissory notes. PREREQUISITE: NONE

CBA-401 Intermediate Accounting 120 hours / 6 credits

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to understand accounting principles and terminology applicable to the merchandising industry; including special journals, the combined journal, completion of the accounting cycle, bad debts, and notes receivable and payable; and be able to utilize QuickBooks accounting software in applied accounting situations. PREREQUISITE: CBA-102 BASIC ACCOUNTING

CBA-502 Advanced Accounting 120 hours / 6 credits

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to understand accounting principles and terminology related to inventory, plant and equipment, cash flows, analysis of financial statements vouchers, departmental accounting, and manufacturing accounting and will learn to utilize Peachtree Accounting software in applied accounting situations.
