OBJECTIVE
Upon successful completion of the Medical Office Administration program, the student will have been trained in the necessary skills to utilize business productivity software (including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) in standard business operations, to understand basic human anatomy and physiology, to understand and apply correct medical terminology in a medical office setting, to greet patients and schedule appointments, to demonstrate proficiency in the use of the International Classification of Disease (ICD-9) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) in coding medical records and forms, and to understand how to use standard government and third-party insurance forms. The student will also have been trained to communicate effectively in a professional business environment.
Having successfully completed the program, the student may qualify for such positions as Medical Office Assistant, Medical Administrative Assistant, Medical Receptionist, Medical Biller, or Insurance Coder.
This course is designed to provide the student with the necessary skills to understand and use computer terminology; to utilize the Windows operating system in performing functions with the Windows desktop environment; to perform basic touch-typing at a minimum proficiency of 20 words per minute; to create and revise business documents with Microsoft Word features such as editing, formatting, saving, retrieving, and enhancing; to understand and productively use the Internet for research and communication, including using search engines and sending and receiving e-mail messages and attachments. PREREQUISITE: NONE
This course is designed to provide the student with the foundation to develop a working knowledge of correct business communication, mechanics, and usage of grammar; utilize correct word choices in sentences; analyze the contents of various types of messages; write effective e-mails, memos, and letters; make oral reports; develop and improve proofreading abilities; and develop effective communication skills for employment to include: resumes, cover letters, and interviews. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to understand the basic structure and function of the human body as a whole and of individual body systems; apply the correct medical terminology to basic body structures and functions; identify the most common pathological conditions as well as the causes and effects of these conditions; utilize root words, prefixes, suffixes, symbols, and abbreviations in understanding medical language; and properly and efficiently use a medical dictionary. PREREQUISITE: NONE
This course is designed to provide the student with the necessary skills to understand to utilize various Microsoft Excel tools to manipulate a spreadsheet; to use Microsoft Access to create, save, edit and retrieve database files; and to use Microsoft PowerPoint to create, animate, and save original presentations. PREREQUISITE: BUS-100 PC APPLICATIONS I
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the basics of medical bookkeeping, prepare various third party and government insurance forms and documents; and demonstrate proficiency in the use of International Classification of Disease (ICD-9) and Current Procedural Technology (CPT). PREREQUISITE: MOA-302 ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY WITH MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY
This course is designed to give the student the opportunity for hands-on practice in the Medical Office Administration field (through 90 hours of externship, which is am unpaid assignment) and to prepare students for finding and keeping a job in this field (through 30 hours of class work). The student will be assigned to an appropriate medical office facility for hands-on application of the skills learned in previous courses and will be supervised by a physician or healthcare provider at the site. The student's performance will be monitored through ongoing evaluation by the site supervisor in conjunction with the school's externship coordinator. In the career preparation classes, the student will finalize an appropriate resume, learn job-hunting skills, and study professional behavior and office etiquette. PREREQUISITES: MUST FIRST PASS ALL OTHER MOA COURSES
